Music & Me

Hi Everyone! I am Grace McKinney, and I am a senior at Converse. I am a biology major completing the pre-physical therapy track. I am graduating from Converse in the spring and plan to attend Physical Therapy School in the fall! I am on the softball team, so if you ever see a girl in class with a softball uniform on... that's me! I have been playing softball since I was four, but on the other hand, I have never taken any music or instrument lessons. It is quite funny because I believe my brother got all the artistic and musical talents within the family. A current obsession of mine right now is my new puppy, Sully! He is a golden doodle and he is so spoiled!

Here pictured are Sully and Me.

I took Music of Diverse Cultures because I love learning about different places and people and I enjoy listening to music. I am excited to get to add some new music to my Spotify playlist!

My Current Go-To Music:

One of my current go-to songs on my Spotify playlist right now is Flowers by Miley Cyrus. I think I like the story behind the song much more than the song itself, but the song is pretty catchy! I have always been a fan of Miley even since the days of Hannah Montana.

In terms of specific music, my current go-to and probably always will be my go-to is Contemporary Country. I just like the messages within the songs and the typical ballads with string instruments. Although, I do love some acoustic country songs ( I think I hear more consonance harmonies in acoustic tracks!) Cody Johnson is my new current favorite country singer! But... I do like the "oldies" such as George Straight and Reba. The Hot Country playlist on Spotify is what I listen to every day!

Meaningful Music:

The type of music that is meaningful to me is worship music. I am a Christian and I grew up going to church and I still attend! This type of music just reminds me of my Grandma and early Sunday mornings at church. I view worship music as a way to unite believers together in a unique way. I always try to listen to this type of music in the morning to get me going for my day, and I would say it does work! Some worship music can have me singing so loud and some of the lyrics and melodies have me crying (lol). I can always be in the mood to listen to worship music! This specific song reminds me of the good memories of singing this at different church camps I went to growing up and being with my friends and family. The harmonies, the melodies, and the lyrics brighten my day and make my heart feel good! One of my FAVORITES!

Not Really Feeling This:

I might get a little hate for this one, but one song I really do not like is "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. I like Billy Joel, especially his song Uptown Girls, but I can not get into this song. I think this has to do with growing up in school and every history teacher would play this song every year. To me, it is like Billy Joel is not even singing the lyrics, but rather just saying them very fast. Maybe, If I was born/growing up when this song came out, I might have enjoyed it more. I like songs that tell a story, but not this one! I do appreciate the high energy and it is very easy to start singing the chorus after hearing it 1000 times!

  2. I agree with you with Miley Cyrus new song "Flowers". The meaning of it has been all over social media and eventually I had to take a look to listen. I was a fan of her back in her Hannah Montana phase but once she got to the wrecking ball phase I was done following her (went a bit cuckoo). I Did not know what the expect from the "Flowers" song but it was actually better than I thought (i agree it is catchy).
